Aero Vanilla Yogourt, Turtles White

It doesn't only follow the yogourt trend like Coffee Crisp Yogourt I reviewed earlier, Aero vanilla yogourt adds in the vanilla element. The long narrow aero bar (which got a wrapper makeover also) has a vanilla yogourt filling. After the bubbles melt, you're left with a creamy yogourt filling on your tongue. Seems to me more like a UK or Asia flavor bar smile
I have to say, I enjoy Turtles White more than the infamous classic version. White chocolate replaces the milk chocolate coating. I find these not as sweet as the original, maybe it's my imagination. Snow colored turtles look cuter than brown ones... Anyway, these were only around for a Christmas season.

Coffee Crisp Maple, Yogourt

There was a period when maple flavored chocolate bars were popping up left and right... trends, you gotta love 'em. Coffee Crisp Maple, luckily, was one of the better tasting maple bars. This Coffee Crisp isn't overwhelmed by the strong taste maple tends to have. OhHenry Maple and Cadbury Dairymilk Maple were two bars that were too sweet with maple flavor. Ok, got the maple under control - but what happened to the coffee flavor?? I wouldn't buy a jar of maple syrup if what I wanted is coffee.
And yet still, there was a trend of yoghurt flavor... I mean, yogourt flavor. The coating of Coffee Crisp Yogourt is, you guessed it, yogourt instead of chocolate. Not bad, but... just give me the coffee flavor back please.

Gimme Your Stuff!

Gimme Your Stuff

In order to expand my candy bar collection, to include foreign chocolates from countries around the world, I demand you to Gimme Your Stuff!

Yes, I would like to receive chocolate bars from YOUR country!
Ok now, what would you like from Canada? How about some nice..
  • Candies or chocolates (delicious? Yes!) biggrin
  • Souveniers specific to Canada (keychains, postcards, etc)
  • Your own ideas.. drop a comment or email me at homar200@uregina.ca and I'll see what I can do!
wink Mary

Smarties Peanut, Canadian

These Limited Edition Canadian Smarties were release a few years back for Canada Day. What better way to show my nation's pride! Now I'll have a 50% chance of eating the red ones last razz The slogan on the box is Eat the red ones last, eh?, how cliche!
Peanut Smarties is somewhat like peanut M&M's. I do prefer the chocolate taste and thicker candy coating on these, over M&M's.

Rolo Irish Cream

Why can't Nestle Canada make delicious variations of bars, like this Rolo Irish Cream from the UK. I'm not a fan of the regular (and only) Rolo bar here in Canada. In this version, irish cream flavored caramel is enrobed in white chocolate. A flight of steps above the original. Wait a minute, this isn't a chocolate bar.. it's a roll of chocolate tabs..

Nestle Milkybar Chunky, ToffeeCrisp

What can be equivalent to, and more delicious than, drinking a glass of milk? eating a Milkybar Chunky! This bar is from Nestle Australia, and is aimed at kids. A deliciously creamy bar of white chocolate. A bit plain-Jane but!
Nestle's Toffee Crisp is a UK bar. Color of the wrapper makes me think of Reese's, but no peanut butter is to be found inside. Instead, you have a layer of soft toffee, atop a layer of rice crisps and chocolate, all enrobed in milk chocolate. I really enjoy the better quality (not as sweet) chocolate, in comparison to American bars. Hey the name says it all - you've got your toffee, you've got your rice crisp.

Nestle's Lion, Lion White

Nestle's Lion is a popular bar in Europe. Inside is a layer of creme filled wafers, surrounded by rice crisps and caramel, and enrobed in milk chocolate. Personally, I don't really like this bar. I find wafers a bit boring, and not as filling as eating say... an OhHenry. But Nestle must be doing something right with this one, because it's huge in Europe.
Lion White is not as popular as the original (it may be limited edition, but doesn't say on the wrapper). The bar is the same, sub white chocolate for milk chooclate. I do prefer this over the original, I think due to its novelty more than anything wink

Twix White, Twix Top

Limited Edition Twix White is my all time (2nd) favorite chocolate bar!! These are available in some European countries (Suisse is where I purchased it).
Compared to the regular Twix bar from Canada - the milk chocolate is replaced with white chocolate, the cookie is a little softer, the caramel a little less sweet, and the whole thing is alot more scrumptious!! It's a perfect marriage between all the flavors and texture. The wrapper is actually a a shiny silver color, which the picture doesn't show very well.
Twix Top is s staple chocolate bar of France. Very popular, they weigh 26g each and come in boxes of 8 from the grocery store (or packages of 4 from vending machines). It's not the regular Twix bar as we know it, but the components are all there. There is a flat cookie bottom, with a caramel layer in the middle, and milk chocolate on top. Eyeing it, I'd say the proportion of cookie/caramel/chocolate is about 50/20/30. Very enjoyable!

Twix Peanut Butter

Twix Peanut Butter is totally delicious Ok, I might be a little biased because I love peanut butter to begin with. Caramel in the regular Twix is replaced by peanut butter. It's the right proportion of cookie to peanut butter to chocolate, so it's allll good. It's a "new" product in Canada, but they have been in production elsewhere already. Notice the slightly different descriptions on the two wrappers. The top "Peanut Butter cookie bars" is one I bought from Giant Tiger a while back (imported from the US perhaps). The bottom "Peanut Butter filled cookie bars" are the new ones available now in Canada. The bars themselves were identical.

Wonka Bars

I was really hoping to find a winning ticket underneath the wrappers of my Wonka Bars. There was no winning ticket, however I did find some good milk chocolate with bits of graham crackers. Purchasing these from a novelty candy store here in Regina may account for the slighty stale taste. Yes, I bought 3 of the Wonka Bars (at outrageous prices) just for the different wrappers razz
The petite Donutz is a ring shaped, soft chocolate center, with a chocolate confection shell, and sprinkles atop. Not quite a chocolate bar. The inside does resemble a donut-tasting product. Surprisingly enough, the chocolate center is quite soft - I wonder how much preservatives goes in to make it that way wink
Oh, and in case you're wondering - Nestle produces these bars, not the Willy Wonka company!

Mars Delight

Mars Delight is to allot of European countries like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups is to Canada. It's very popular and can be found in all grocery stores and vending machines in metro stations. Don't let the name fool you, it is nothing like the Mars bar found here. The inside is a very crisp folded wafer, surrounded by a praline filling, and covered in milk chocolate. It's very sweet and rich, and the chocolate melts quite easily (so be ready for chocolatey fingers). Each package holds 2 bars, sort of like a Twix but up and down instead of side by side. Quite a good bar, if not a little on the sweet side. The top is one I purchased in France, and the other from an import store here in Canada. No, I didn't win a makeover - the contest was over already anyway wink

Snickers Hard, Snickers Cruncher

I had purchased these from Switzerland, though I'm sure I spotted them in parts of Austria and Germany.
The Limited Edition Snickers Hard looks interesting. Hmm, I can throw a Snickers into the freezer and it'll turn hard...
Anyway, when I bit the bar, I was surprised to find it relatively soft and chewy. Could the "Hard" name be referring to more peanuts in the bar? I didn't notice an abundance of peanuts. This might just be the most deceiving wrapper & naming I've come accross. Was still tastey though!
Picture on the Snickers Cruncher wrapper reminds me of a Quaker chocolate coated granola bar. The regular filling found in a Snickers is replaced by rice crisps, and possibly more peanuts - held together with caramel. When I think of Snickers, "rice crisps" doesn't come to mind - you know, rice crisps belong in.. rice crispies. And yet still, I give a second tastey thumbs up to this one.

Shrek the Third M&M's, Snickers

Effem released two bars in time for the release of Shrek 3.
The Ogre Sized Peanut Butter M&M's taste exactly like the regular peanut butter M&M's. I love those to begin with, plus these are swamp colored (light green, orange, brown) and ogre sized (more peanut butter/chooclate ratio) Ohh these are good - we have a winner!!

Then there is the Snickers with Green Shrek Filling. Could it be.. slime? I'm open tol new candy experiences, bring it on cool
Upon the first bite, I was hit with an overwhelming pungeunt odor. Looking down at the bar, surely enough, I see a florescent green filling oozing in place of the nougat. Chewing slowly, I let the moldy flavor, exactly how I thought slime would taste, spread across my tongue to the roof of my mouth. After swallowing, I was left with a lingering aftertaste of dirt - similar to dirt you ate as a kid...
Ok, I lied. I didn't eat dirt as a kid, so I'm oblivious to its taste. That, and the bar tasted no different than a regular Snickers. I couldn't discern any difference, regardless of how much I expected to taste pistacio... or mud... This Snickers variation has the same crunchy peanuts, chewy caramel, and soft (green) nougat - all after breaking through the milk chocolate coating. It was quite enjoyable actually. And more fun to eat than your regular, 3 shades-of-brown, chocolate bar.
I would keep a few of these around. If not just to eat while watching Shrek. Must sneak... Shrek3 Snickers... into theatre. And then we'll see if the green filling glows in the dark as well wink

Hazelnut/Cinnamon/Extra Crispy KitKats

KitKat Chunky Hazelnut Cream - I was excited when coming across this at a train station grocery store in Lucerne, Switzerland. Was expecting a strong hazelnut taste, but that wasn't the case. Hazelnut flavor is a bit subtle, but there. One of the GOOD KitKat versions! I love the hazelnut concept!
KitKat Cinnamon - I had a dreaded feeling towards it when I spotted this at a 711. It exceeded my grossness expectations. Only was able to stomach 1/3 of the bar before tossing the rest out. Can't remember the exact taste as I was concentrating on controlling my gag reflex. Nestle Canada PLEASE think about your flavors before putting them on shelves!
KitKat Extra Crispy - I know it's just a gimmick with Twice the Crisp claim. This bar is from the US, and not available in Canada (it's surprising the jewels you find at Dollar stores). I don't notice much of a difference from the regular KitKat. Maybe just a bit more wafer and less chocolate.

Limited Edition Fruit KitKats

KitKat Orange was a release a few summers back. Orange and chocolate go together well.. say in Terry's Chocolate Orange. That isn't the case here. The orange flavor tastes very simulated. Good thing this bar didn't stick around!
KitKat Banana was release the same time as its orange cousin. I have never ever been a fan of chocolate and banana. That is just a shake your head in disbelief that people enjoy it, kinda thing. Peanutbutter & banana - good! Peanutbutter, banana, & chocolate - great! But just chocolate & banana.. nono. Taste is far worst than the orange version. Nestle sure dropped the ball on flavors that summer.
KitKat Editions Mango & Passionfruit - purchased this from a store in Calgary that imports UK products. The English sure know how to mix fruit and chocolate far better! Great mango and passionfruit taste. I recall a jamlike texture for the fruit, but that may be my imagination. Thumbs way up to this!!! thumb

Welcome to Mar's Bars!

Mar's Bars is a blog dedicated to rants and raves on chocolate bars, started in May of 2007. I'm Mary, a 22 year old student from Saskatchewan Canada. The blog title comes from a nickname my sister gave me, Mar. Unfortunately there's a saturation on the "blogspot.com" domain, so some improvision lead to http://supermarsbars.blogspot.com

Lack of a writing background is my excuse for some uncreative descriptions in posts. In other words, you may catch me using "tastey" and "delicious" alot of times, occasionally throwing in madeup terms such as "chocolate-ness". Hey as long as it gets the message across wink

This blog will stick to chocolates, as I have a chocolate-tooth more than a sweet-tooth. In fact I hardly like candy at all! I crave novelty, so will try all chocolate bars at least once (if it's really good maybe twice and even thrice). And I'm especially drawn to "Limited Edition" chocolate bars, the gimmicks do work!

Feel free to leave comments and emails. Happy chocolate eating!

Mary
